Event information

As the weather starts to cool down it is a great time to explore Bold Park and observe the bushland during the Noongar season of Djeran.

Djeran is sometimes referred to as the season of red flowers and the largest of these, the flowers of the Menzies Banksia, have started to bloom. Female sheoak trees have small red flowers that often catch the rain or early morning dew to sparkle in the sunlight. The berries of saltbush plants also turn red when ripe to attract birds, which transport the seeds in their guts to be “deposited” in a new location.

The first rains stimulate the germination of seeds stored in the soil from last year and new green shoots may be seen popping up. The early rains also stimulate new ant queens to fly away from their nest to mate and set up new colonies of their own. The many flying ants provide food for small birds, lizards and even bats.

Prepare for your walk:

  • Approximately 1.5 hours duration.
  • Walking grade is moderate with some steeper sections; not suitable for wheelchairs and prams.
  • Wear sturdy, closed-in shoes and come dressed for the weather with a hat and drinking water.
  • There are no toilets in Bold Park. The nearest toilet facilities are at Perry Lakes Reserve.
  • All guided walks are free and bookings are generally not required for individuals.

Please contact the Friends of Bold Park Bushland if you have a group greater than ten people who wish to attend.

Our events go ahead in rain or shine, however walks may be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. Refer to the notices section for current closures and service interruptions.
