Plant Science and Herbariums

Documenting and describing the diversity of Bold Park’s flora

The Western Australian Herbarium is responsible for the description and documentation of Western Australia's exceptional botanical species diversity. Students undertake activities to create and document the diversity of Western Australia's flora found in Bold Park.

Walk some of Bold Park’s trails to collect and identify specimens to create a class herbarium collection, an important tool in botanical field surveys. Understanding herbariums are important collections, along with their notes, photographs and plant material, as permanent records of a species occurrence at a particular place and time, invaluable for biodiversity conservation planning and management.

This program is a great add-on to any of our Bold Park programs. Students discuss the diversity, distribution and ecology of the state’s flora.

Students will:

  • create a collection of specimens as a permanent and physical record for the presence, distribution and names of flora in Bold Park (native and invasive plant species)
  • understand and identify plants through use of identification tools
  • use living collections as a field survey tool
