Anigozanthos ‘Big Red’

Kangaroo Paw (hybrid)

Just as its name describes, this kangaroo paw can't be missed for its spectacular size and colour!

The large, bright red flowers of this striking kangaroo paw hybrid are displayed at the ends of the long upright spikes in late spring - early summer.

The plant grows to approximately 0.6 m high with flower spikes reaching up to 2 m. For a show-stopping display, plant en masse as a single colour or mix with a range of varying colour forms of kangaroo paw hybrids. If you have a small backyard, this species can also be planted as a single specimen or grown in a large container.

Grow it at home

  • Best planted in autumn and winter months
  • Apply slow release native blend 8-9 month fertiliser at planting and annually
  • Thrives in all soil types, provided they are free-draining
  • Plant in full sun for best results
  • Once established requires little water, however for optimum floral display, best watered twice weekly during flowering
  • Water at the base of the plant to avoid water remaining on the foliage
  • Cut flower stems to their base as they finish
  • Every second to third year prune entire plant to ground level in early autumn to maintain health and vigour

This strappy-leaved, herbaceous perennial is a hybrid between Anigozanthos flavidus and Anigozanthos rufus.  Plant these in your garden for a busy backyard of nectar feeding birds.
